Our liturgical dance classes teach the basics of almost every dance form today.  Our students receive basic instruction in ballet, modern, african, hip-hop and jazz.  Becuase Liturgical dance is not confined to one dance type students have the opportunity to not only dance for praise and worship but have a great knowledge of various dance technique.

 What is Liturgical Dance?

Liturgical dance is a Christian expression of prayer or worship through body movement.  Such dances can be accompanied by many different types of music. The dancers will respond with an appropriate dance which flows out of the music and enhances the prayer or worship experience. This dance may either be spontaneous, or have been choreographed ahead of time. If it is choreographed it is generally fitted to the song's lyrics or to religious concepts. Most often this is performed by women but occasionally by men as well.

Liturgical dance is a relatively recent practice in the West, being virtually unpracticed until the twentieth century. However its antecedents go back to accounts of dancing in the Old Testament. An example is the episode when King David danced before the Ark of the Covenant. In other parts of the world dancing as a form of worship is much more popular.

At Shammah Dance and Arts Academy we teach an advanced class for ages 16-Adult called Dance With the Anointing which goes into depth of the gifting of liturgical dance.  Although the anointing can not be "taught" but transferred it is designed to take the dancer to a deeper level of praise and worship dance before the Lord.

We offer a full curriculum for liturgical dance that not only includes technique building but also builds a strong spiritual foundation.
